Hey,
I haven't been as good at keeping in contact as I'd hoped so I thought I'd try writing a letter. I'm hoping that I can share some of what I've been doing and you can see something you wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It's a bit odd, but I thought I might start these with a bit of a list.
Sooo... what are some things that I'm grateful for right now:
My wonderful family
Being able to see some summer storms again!
That I'm healthy and safe
And what's a mistake I learnt from recently:
If I wait for the perfect time to call someone, then it may never be perfect instead, I can find a way to communicate now like in this letter. Someone far smarter than me (Voltaire) has a saying about this "Perfect is the enemy of good".
Okay, so I've travelled a lot recently. It's been sooo many hours of driving. I'll have to tell you more about that in a different letter, but right now, I'm not in Seattle anymore. I know I didn't know a lot of these places before I moved out here, so I'm going to add a map here for you. Before you zoom out, close your eyes and try to imagine where it is. Did you get close?
Okay, so where am I now? Well, last night, I drove into a place called New Orleans. I still don't know a lot about it.
So, what are some fun facts about New Orleans? I'm not sure to be honest, so I'm going to learn with you and search the internet! I do know one thing though, it's built on a very famous river. I think, maybe, you've heard of it. One of the reasons the river is famous is because it has a long name that's hard to spell. Are you ready? It's Missisipi... wait... Mississipi... hmm... Mississippi? I got it! That was tough! You can see it on this map, it runs from top to bottom of the US.
Okay, what else did I learn? Lots of different people have lived here! First, there was the Native American tribe, the Chitimacha. Then the French came and lived here. The French decided to sell it to the Spanish for forty years, and when they got it back, it took them less than a month to sell it to the US! In the 1800s it was the wealthiest city in the US but the third largest! There have been a lot of hurricanes (that's what they call a cyclone here) that have hit here. Okay, I better stop now!
I really want to show you some of the places I found before I got here. I think you'll love it... but I'm not sure if my photos will be better than in that video. Before I show you those, guess what happened yesterday when I was driving here? An alligator ran across the road and all the cars had to move out of the way!! I couldn't get a photo, but here are some photos of some other animals!
While I was hiking yesterday, I found this bird. I'm not sure what bird it is so maybe you could help. Do you think it might be a hawk? Around this time, I heard some people shooting guns. I hope they weren't trying to shoot the bird!
There was one animal I saw there that I think you've seen before! I tried to get a good video for you, but I wasn't too loud! Here's my video anyway. I hope you like it!
While I was walking along, the path disappeared! I had to walk on a tree that fell over because it was a swamp, and all the ground was sticky mud! Then, I found this lizard! When I was looking though my photos afterwards, I didn't see it! I'm really impressed with it's camouflage. What do you think? It had this trick to make me leave but I was a little slow filming it.
I saw this two days ago, on my lunchtime hike. 🤔 Can you see what it is? I'm not sure I can, because it ran away so quick! I'll give you some hints. They're not in Australia, and they have a shell but they don't swim. Did you guess yet? It's an... armadillo! You can learn more in this video!
Okay, I was thinking about adding a bit about why the animals here are so interesting but maybe we can do that in another letter. What do you think of this one? And do you have any questions? Maybe I can answer them in my next letter! I hope you are having a great time out there.
Lots of love,
Bodey
